![]() The traditional Pokémon hooks are there, but the adventure gives players a lot more freedom to roam around and tackle objectives in any order they please. I recently spent a full hour with the game and the change in format certainly seems to work for the series. That could be enough to make it one of the freshest mainline Pokemon games in a decade. ![]() Not only that, but it brings true co-op multiplayer to the series for the first time ever. Nintendo’s last big release of the year is a total reinvention of the traditional Pokemon formula, adapting the game to a true open-world format. The jury’s still out on whether or not Pokémon Violet and Scarlet will be another win for the long-running monster catching franchise, but I’d be remiss not to mention it here. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Image used with permission by copyright holder Somerville launches on November 15 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. If nothing else, Somerville looks like it’ll deliver a striking visual style that should at the very least make for an eerie 2D thriller. Trailers have teased a haunting alien invasion story that seems like a small-scale version of War of the Worlds. Playdead was responsible for creating arguably two of the best indies of all time in both Limbo and Inside, so the expectations for Somerville are a little high.īased on the little we’ve seen of it so far, though, it looks like Somerville could live up to Playdead’s greatest hits. The atmospheric adventure game is the debut title from Jumpship, a studio co-founded by former Playdead co-founder Dino Patti. Somerville is one of those indie critical darlings that seems like it came out of left field, even though it’s been right under our nose the entire time. If that holds true in the entire game, Pentiment could end up being one of 2022’s biggest surprises, giving Xbox a much-needed hit. I was able to customize Andreas to my liking, giving him specific skills (like a background in occult studies) that would have a real impact on my story even in a short demo. Its gorgeous art direction is immediately noticeable, but the RPG systems are what stuck with me the most. I got a chance to play Pentiment at Gamescom this year and I found myself engrossed instantly. What’s most eye-catching about it, though, is its illustrative art style that beautifully pulls inspiration from medieval art, from woodcuts to manuscripts. Pentiment is a 16th-century murder deduction story that chronicles the life of Andreas, a journeyman who finds himself mixed up in a series of crimes and mysteries that span decades. Developed by Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment, the narrative RPG probably isn’t what you’d expect when you hear the phrase “Xbox exclusive” That’s exactly what makes it so intriguing, though. It hasn’t been a great year for Xbox (that’s putting it mildly), but that could change in a few weeks thanks to Pentiment. It offers an intriguing premise, which it delivers with great use of humor and exposition. Protocol is still a playable, if not a good video game despite its flaws in controls and cross-platform optimization. While it supports both VR and non-VR games, it suffers from optimization problems that affect both. Also, the game suffers from a glaring problem, mostly the controls. ![]() Most actions cannot be undone, requiring you to restart from your previous save instead. There are parts where you’ll have no choice but restart certain sections of the game. It is engaging and funny, yes, but remember that this game is also difficult. Take note though, that it manages to create a smooth transition of locations and interactions for the entire length of the game-something that takes several hours to go through. ![]() There are aliens and opponents to shoot at, puzzles to solve, massive walking simulator-like areas, and a lot of comedy material to go on. As the overseer of the program, the AI not only tells you what to do but is also smug and witty about it.Ĭomparing it to the games mentioned above could give players an idea of what to expect. They are well thought out and wandering around actually gets you random remarks from the AI. From a location in the Arctic Circle to a completely alien realm, the set designs are as good as they get. In Protocol, you explore different locations that illustrate your journey.
